Who knew reducing CO2 emissions could be so fun! With AKQA and Fiat’s new eco:Drive integrated technology system, we get a seamless blend of environmental friendliness and social media savvy. With this new technology you can track your driving habits (from gear shifting to braking speed) and let your computer tell you what you need to do in order to reduce your fuel consumption and your CO2 emissions. Simply unplug a USB drive from your car, plug it into your computer and presto! You get a gaggle of charts and graphs, bubbly graphics and tips on how to improve your driving habits.
But the best part: you enter into a social community! Participants contribute to eco:Ville and can track other driver’s progress as well as the collective savings in fuel and emissions.
So what does this mean? It’s a practical way to get involved with a social/environmental issue. And it sounds like fun! And with the integration of an online social community, you can see the immediate results of your environmental awareness and interact with other like-minded individuals.
What are some other applications for this technology? Could we start seeing USB chips in shoes monitoring where you walk, recognizing what kinds of stores you enter, tracking you via GPS, while your computer connects you with an interactive community of like-minded shoppers? On a larger scale, what about a “smart home” that tracks your energy uses and compiles charts and graphs, providing you with tips on how to optimize your home’s energy usage?
The possibilities seems endless…check out the video that explains the eco:Drive technology, it’s pretty impressive!
What other ways could this kind of technology be used? Leave a comment and tell us your ideas!
