According to Wikipedia, “most internet users spend less than one minute on the average website.”1 While I may spend a bit more time on the web, I can’t argue the fact that I definitely fly through the interwebs like a modified YT-1300 Corellian light freighter. A blog post that looks too long? Skip. A video over one minute? Usually pass. When I’m surfing the web, I want 30 second videos, blogs with bullet points and lots of pictures. I got places to be and other sites to see people!
Even online adult films are reacting to the internet trend. Vivid Entertainment recently announced that they will no longer make films with storylines…people don’t have time!
“On the Internet, the average attention span is three to five minutes,” said Steven Hirsch, co-chairman of Vivid Entertainment. “We have to cater to that.”2
So what does that mean for online marketing? Make it fast, make it snap.
I think pay per click ads are an untapped resource in this department. It has one of the necessary features; it’s fast. Just two lines plus a headline; I can read a PPC ad in seconds. What it lacks? Pizzazz. Anyone who has spent any time on the internet knows what an ad looks and sounds like. We avoid them. Search engines flood us with exclamation points and words like “free” and “act now.” Basically, the average internet user is smarter than the average PPC ad. Why not shake it up? Give me an ad that’s edgy, that snaps, some razzle-dazzle. Yes, we internet users may be numb to typical, salesy ads, but we’re suckers for shiny, snazzy things. So give us what we want. You only got one minute so make it count!
How do you think PPC could be used more effectively? How are shrinking attention spans affecting you? Any other ideas to combat hyperspeed web browsing?
