The Social Rundown

by Dustin Diehl on August 27, 2010

With Facebook Places making a big splash in the social media world last week, this week seems pretty quiet in comparison. But quiet doesn’t mean dead, as there was certainly some social news worth reporting. Here’s the rundown:

The “Old Spice Guy” ad won an Emmy award for Outstanding Commercial over the weekend. What? Social media campaigns getting recognized by “legitimate” organizations? Yes. And just further proof that a quality, well-executed social media campaign is worth its weight in…body wash. Congratulations to ad agency Wieden + Kennedy!

Yelp is developing a “Daily Deals” feature that will work much like Groupon. Rolled out to the San Diego audience, this seems like a natural progression for Yelp, marrying reviews with targeted location discounts. While this puts Yelp in competition with Groupon, as with many of these social tête-à-têtes, the customer comes out the victor. And with all this segmentation of granular services popping up everywhere (from Location Based Services to management tools, etc.), one of the most interesting growth opportunities comes with aggregation platforms, such as DealRadar.

Google released its unique URL for Google Realtime (www.google.com/realtime), a search functionality that offers up the newest and most relevant web content. With location search capabilities, real-time Twitter searches and trend graphs, Google Realtime is definitely the future of search. After all, we can’t seem to get things fast enough these days!

A fairly quiet week, but things never stop moving forward. Did we miss anything? Anything else happen in social land that caught your eye? Share thoughts, links and insights in the comments below!
